Hilary York at 13th Floor

Your AMM host’s first introduction to Hilary York, self-described “’70s singer/songwriter stuck in the present,” was with York’s 2006 romantic full-length debut The Moon, in particular the intimate sway of “Out of Sight” and the awe and wonderment in “Any Sweeter” (“…Something like that day / It’s the same light today”). Originally from Houston, York spent time overseas with her musical family as a child, but it was her move to Austin when she first picked up the guitar. She’s been playing shows in the Live Music Capital and points beyond, including NYC and Spain, since 2000.

Today’s featured AMM track “Over the Line” is from the 2021 full-length release 3, produced by The Greyhounds and featuring contributions by a huge local all-star artist list, from Gian Ortiz (Je’Texas) and Mike St. Clair (Pocket Sounds), to Lauren Gurgiolo and Nick Yaklin. And this month, York has a Monday night residency at The 13th Floor, 711 Red River. Catch the show tonight, Monday Feb. 20, starting at 9 p.m.

Voice Box

It’s alluring. And it belongs on your soundtrack, on repeat, when you can’t quite put that agonizing ache into words. Why Bonnie‘s Voice Box (Fat Possum Records) is the multi-layered, dreamy pop embodiment of catharsis. There’s an undeniable emotional release of Blair Howerton’s lyricism and luminous vocals. -Photo of Blair Howerton by John Bergin. Howerton […]

Hycha Wy

What a killer premiere for Nemegata. Last year’s fiery debut LP Hycha Wy earned the Austin-based band rave reviews by none other than Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke in a review he did for MOJO, praising the “power-trance trio” for their multifaceted roots grooves. Recorded by producer Beto Martinez (Prince, Brownout, Grupo Fantasma) and […]

Reaching Authentic Essence

Lunar R.A.E. (née AbstractAmb, borne of musician Amber Baker) is the badass behind the drum set with Austin-based band Sir Woman. Her work also includes performing with Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and collaborating with bassist MonoNeon – no small coincidence he was one of the last musicians to work with Prince, FYI. Badass attracts badass. But […]

Laying It Down

Since your Austin Music Minute host instantly became a big fan, the excitement is palpable. A couple of months ago on the ol’ Instagram, Adrian Quesada‘s Electric Deluxe Recorders posted a couple of behind-the-scenes shots of  Buffalo Nichols (Carl Nichols) recording some tracks with drummer Brannen Temple and engineer Aaron Glemboski (Redbeard Productions). This is […]

Surrealist Archeologist

The AMM has a couple of (very abridged) definitions to give you some perspective on today’s featured artist. First, there’s archeology, stories from the excavation and analysis of various objects; and surrealism, creativity stemming from the unconscious mind. In a way, renown cellist and songwriter Helen Gillet applies both to her work as a self-described […]
