Hycha Wy

By: Laurie Gallardo

What a killer premiere for Nemegata. Last year’s fiery debut LP Hycha Wy earned the Austin-based band rave reviews by none other than Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke in a review he did for MOJO, praising the “power-trance trio” for their multifaceted roots grooves. Recorded by producer Beto Martinez (Prince, Brownout, Grupo Fantasma) and longtime collaborator Juan Alvarez, the album fuses traditional Colombian sounds with a broad spectrum of various contemporary North and South American influences, ranging from psych to garage rock to the blues.

The album title, Hycha Wy, translates from the Muisca language Chibcha into, quite simply, “I am.” And the band is – the convergence of all these influences into one collective identity.

An excellent beginning to the week. Nemegata continues their residency at One-2-One Bar, 1509 S. Lamar with a show tonight, Monday July 12, starting at 9:30 p.m.

HAAM Day 2023

Your AMM host hears a lot of stories from local musicians about HAAM. These are praises shouted from the rooftops. “If it wasn’t for HAAM, I wouldn’t have been able to see a doctor…” “Without HAAM, I wouldn’t have been able to get this dental work I needed…” “If HAAM wasn’t here to help me, […]
