Exotica

By: Laurie Gallardo

Check out the track featured on today’s AMM, “Gambling Man,” by Houston-based artist Fat Tony, who recently released Exotica on DC label Carpark Records. It’s an age-old tale with modern angles, as Fat Tony captures multiple levels of frustration along the journey – how will the money be made? The hustle is eternal. Ventures blow up, but not in the narrator’s favor. Instead, the blows he’s dealt are the plans, schemes and dreams going awry…or nowhere at all.

Fat Tony describes his latest album as his ode to the art of storytelling through music, but pushes it further with the idea of storytelling as a mode of transportation. “Picture records like The Great Adventures of Slick Rick.,” he says. “Artists like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, or Bob Marley. Every lyric was carefully considered to make sure we properly conveyed each character’s narrative and motivations. I wanted to create a world of unique stories with room for each to be interpreted in distinct ways.”

You have an opportunity to see Fat Tony perform this Friday night, November 6, at The Far Out Lounge, 8504 S. Congress Ave., with a line-up featuring Deezie Brown and Nayome. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the show starts at 9 p.m. Table seating only, and masks are required.

Misandrist To Most

The best music artists aren’t married to one genre. Lady Dan (a.k.a. Tyler Dozier) wouldn’t be able to stick to just one if she tried. Prior to making her 2019 debut with the EP Songs For the Soulless, Dozier had been listening to all kinds of music. “I just didn’t find my people,” Dozier says […]

Lie To Me

There are “the before-times,” and…everything occurring after the pandemic started, often denoting significant change. So in this case, it’s shifting gears in songwriting. As mentioned earlier this month on KUTX’s Song of the Day, Nick Adamo had been poised to run with some major surf-rock vibes before everything abruptly shut down. Three years was plenty […]

Silver Linings

Elise Cook is your narrator within the headspace of Silver Linings, the debut LP by Austin-based lo-fi outfit Bleach Burn. Though the tone is conversational, it’s delivered in a slightly hushed manner, adding to the mystique of its misty dream-pop haze. And there are dreams. There are unanswered questions. A desire is crackling beneath the […]

A Toast To Geto Gala

Considering the dynamos behind the synergy of Geto Gala, perhaps the whole might be greater than the sum of its parts. But tap on the breaks there, Aristotle. Both are great artists in their own right. Bastrop-born and raised Deezie Brown enchants and intrigues with the autobiographical stories of 5th Wheel Fairytale, where funk, gospel, […]
