Exotica

By: Laurie Gallardo

Check out the track featured on today’s AMM, “Gambling Man,” by Houston-based artist Fat Tony, who recently released Exotica on DC label Carpark Records. It’s an age-old tale with modern angles, as Fat Tony captures multiple levels of frustration along the journey – how will the money be made? The hustle is eternal. Ventures blow up, but not in the narrator’s favor. Instead, the blows he’s dealt are the plans, schemes and dreams going awry…or nowhere at all.

Fat Tony describes his latest album as his ode to the art of storytelling through music, but pushes it further with the idea of storytelling as a mode of transportation. “Picture records like The Great Adventures of Slick Rick.,” he says. “Artists like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, or Bob Marley. Every lyric was carefully considered to make sure we properly conveyed each character’s narrative and motivations. I wanted to create a world of unique stories with room for each to be interpreted in distinct ways.”

You have an opportunity to see Fat Tony perform this Friday night, November 6, at The Far Out Lounge, 8504 S. Congress Ave., with a line-up featuring Deezie Brown and Nayome. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the show starts at 9 p.m. Table seating only, and masks are required.

Lost Behind The Clouds

This week, Austin pysch-pop rockers Bali Yaaah debut their first full-length release, Lost Behind The Clouds. Though this time, those swirling cosmic Brit-psych and post-punk vibes hit close to home amidst dreams of…breaking out of lockdown and maybe flying off to the beach? Hell yes. At the time of production, the notion of lockdown was […]

Speaker Bump Special

It’s the Speaker Bump Social, though leave it to your AMM host to keep referring to tonight‘s line-up at Hole In the Wall as the “Speaker Bump Special.” But it is special! Don’t forget to get your hands on Ben Buck’s B Sides remix compilation, put together by the ATX-based rapper/beatbox himself. From traditional to […]

The Lonesome Crowded West

Hardcore Modest Mouse fans, you might roll your eyes but please bear with your AMM host. It’s the truth: There’s catchy, and then there’s the way Modest Mouse does it. Like those first riffs of “Float On” from Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004), all the way on up to the banger […]

It’s Time

“Don’t let me go / I’m not prepared / I’m so damn scared / that I’m almost there.” The photo above was taken by David Brendan Hall. It captures the essence of a Quiet Company show. Taylor Muse leaves his body and something else takes over. The QC fans have always been there for it. […]

Ramble On

Giving credit where credit is due. Many thanks to songwriter and musician Beth Chrisman for the (official) introduction to The Carper Family, back in the day. Your AMM host was quite taken by those superb three-part harmonies so beautifully delivered by Chrisman, Jenni Miori-Hodges and Melissa Carper. Only one Carper in this acoustic trio, mind […]

Estos Tres

It’s three times as badass. The AMM presents the lowdown for your Wednesday night at C-Boy’s Heart and Soul, 2008 S. Congress Ave. No need to explain ’cause you already know, but… John Doe placed his searing brand on punk with X, but damn well brings next-level renegade as a solo artist with LPs like […]
