Soccer Mommy: “Last Girl”

By: Taylor Wallace

Love is a sticky wicket, and Soccer Mommy‘s Sophie Allison knows this well. Her latest album Clean is like reading her private journal, an open-hearted journey through the pitfalls of love, toxic relationships, and the emotional wreckage they leave behind. She uses the album to expose her vulnerable heart in the name of solidarity, offering-up her own deeply personal stories and emotions and allowing listeners to commiserate upon their own strained affairs of the heart, past and present.

“Last Girl” is a song dedicated to her current boyfriend and lead guitarist, Julian Powell. Where many musicians default to cherry-chapstick-flavored pop songs about falling in love, Allison writes about a darker, more honest side– the very human tendency to compare ourselves to a new partner’s past loves, wondering if they think of us as a fun, lovely, new experience or a consolation prize. Set to lo-fi, guitar-driven, indie-pop sounds that are just upbeat enough to create something that sounds like the external nervous excitement of new love, but speaks of the nervous anxiety happening in your head, that’s exactly where this wicket is gonna stick.

“Last Girl” appears on Cool, out now via Fat Possum. Check her out at Stubb’s on April 13th.

Jefrey Siler: “Wounded in Similar Ways”

Part of what makes modern folk-rock acts like Mac DeMarco so memorable is their ability to walk a tightrope between self-deprecating humor, snarky remarks, and heartfelt wisdom. And it makes sense. When you crack a joke or make a bleak shock-value statement, it quickly establishes a surface-level rapport and opens a threshold towards deeper reflections […]

Domestic Tallboys: “Dead Bread”

In the world of “gotcha”-style band handles (whose spot on a marquee may entice unsuspecting listeners in under false pretenses)…nothing will ever come close to “Free Beer”. As a result, countless college bands and beyond have adopted the “Free Beer” moniker, nowadays either temporarily or often with some kind of modifier (“Free Beer & Pizza” […]

Trunk: “Chili’s 45th and Lamar”

Depending on the general reception of a sitting administration, President’s Day often presents the creative community with opportunities to shed some sociopolitical discourse. Today, that’s not quite the case. Instead we’re yielding the podium to a group whose last two albums were Trunk’s America and north american practice space. Yes, we’re talking about Trunk. Look […]

Space Tan: “I Don’t Wanna Die”

Maybe it’s this never-ending relay race of global pandemics, the collective cabin fever many of us endured during the recent ice storm, or just a gentle mist of malaise. Whatever the affliction, if the Milky Way’s main attraction is shining when you’re feeling imprisoned indoors, it’s always worth taking a couple of minutes to soak […]
