Welcome To Texis

By: Laurie Gallardo

It’s awesome that it seems like several reviewers are gleefully feasting on a line delivered by Sleigh BellsAlexis Krauss on “SWEET75,” the opener on their fifth studio release, Texis – yes, that’s an “i” and not an “a.”

Krauss poses this question: “Aren’t you a little too old for rock ‘n’ roll?!” Absolutely not. It’s just that Krauss and partner-in-Sleigh-Bells-crime Derek Miller kick it up several notches past hyperpop-rock into annihilation mode with a pounding fury. Welcome to the dynamic on mad overdrive.

A little more than a decade following their debut Treats, the New York-based duo is once again reverberating with pop-rock-punk-tech electro fury – the pop that eviscerates. Just imagine Krauss and Miller searing past you at a hundred-thousand miles an hour, and they cut the break wire – on purpose.

Make sure you check out the video for today’s AMM featured track, “Locust Laced.” And catch Sleigh Bells tomorrow night, Wednesday October 13, at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the outside stage. Los Angeles noise rap artists Moodie Black open the show. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Please remember to bring your mask.

Pre-Roll ATX

As J Soulja began focusing on his work as a rap artist, he struggled with the fact that there was no support system rooted in Austin to help rappers and hip-hop culture thrive. But, as any force majeure with an entrepreneurial mind, he set something in motion to support other artists on a similar path. […]

Rock ‘N’ Hi-Jive

Ambitious, Bold and Kinda Crazy

Floating Downstream

Time for a deep breath. Release. Just imagine letting go… That’s the mantra behind Semihelix‘s latest single, “Downstream,” an ode to shattering old patterns and reemerging with a clearer sense of gratitude. It feels totally connected to the band’s recent release, “Slower Pace,” where guitarist/vocalist Geannie Friedman laments life’s ruthless rush job. Where have all […]

New Creation Myths

Welcome to a cozy, curious corner of the human psyche. Nestled within is this idea of love, simultaneously familiar and peculiar, stirring memories that put a twinkle in one’s eye. Or…it could resurrect some deeply compartmentalized images too embarrassing or odd to recall. Fort Collins, CO duo Frail Talk explores the nostalgia and awkwardness in […]

Versions of Modern Performance

Seriously, Versions of Modern Performance sounds as though it could’ve been released in the ’80s or ’90s, but it’s the 2022 debut LP by Chicago’s Horsegirl. Maybe it has something to do with album producer John Agnello, who’s also worked with The Breeders, Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. Or, could it be that Nora Cheng, […]
