No shortage of shreds where Olivia Jean is concerned. The multi-talented songwriter/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist shows no mercy on guitar. And the shreds are mighty. Badass. Turn up Jean’s latest release Raving Ghost and you’ll feel ’em by the dozens.
For your AMM host, it began with some wise ass informing your host in condescending tones: “Um, haven’t you heard of The Black Belles? You, of all people… Go look ’em up at Third Man Records.” Jean fronted the super cool garage-goth outfit, in addition to performing alongside the best of the best like Wanda Jackson, John C. Reilly & Tom Brosseau, April March, and this guy I’ve heard of who’s also her husband. Solo LPs like the dark and lovely Bathtub Love Killings, and garage/surf AMM fave Night Owl, cast the net out wider for Jean to explore her own style.
Raving Ghost, out now via Third Man Records, has the rave reviews of several critics praising her incredible diversity. With explosive energy at every turn, Jean’s third LP is owning it full-stop: rock, psych, surf, punk and power pop, powered by that merciless guitar.
Time to experience the intensity live. Olivia Jean brings her Raving Ghost tour to Austin for a show tonight, Saturday June 3, at the Parish. Doors at 7:30 p.m. The Get Lows start out the night. Show up for the rave-up. And check out the video below for the single “Trouble” (as heard on Laurie G’s show).
