I Want More

By: Laurie Gallardo

This is not goodbye forever. It’s merely a relocation. At least, it is for those of us who deeply appreciate Jim Eno‘s work behind the scenes, and undoubtedly the vital role he’s played in an incredible band with a reach far beyond Austin. The AMM’s just gonna be blunt and say: It sucks when one of your favorite people moves away, but it’s just another chapter in the story.

So, you may have heard by now that Eno is making the move back to his home state, Rhode Island. Looking back at everything he’s done, you’ll notice he plays it low key and does his thing without much fanfare or attention. The co-founder and drummer of Spoon is also a highly respected producer who’s worked with a ton of artists at his studio Public Hi-Fi, and he’s the founder of Project Traction, a mentorship boosting the careers of female and non-binary musicians in production and recording.

Naturally, a badass like this deserves a big sendoff party, and that’s exactly what Eno’s getting – though he’d probably insist on people not making a fuss. I WANT MORE: A Salute to Jim Eno + Public Hi-Fi happens tonight, Monday June 5, at Antone’s. Doors at 7 p.m., and it’s a super secret line-up only to be revealed at the show. Even Jim doesn’t know who’s playing. Proceeds from the celebration support Project Traction.

Speaking of which, today’s AMM features a Project Traction single produced by The SuffersKam Franklin and performed by The Vapor Caves, “Sacrifice.” It’s inspiring to see this idea grow and evolve into a game-changer. There’s more on the way. And from your AMM host, a woman and producer, endless gratitude and respect for the person who launched the program, and continues to be an inspiration himself. Thanks, Jim.

Black Rainbows

We’re all guilty of building up expectations. So, you might spin Corinne Bailey Rae‘s latest blazer Black Rainbows and find it something of a departure for Rae, in terms of a style that incorporates R&B, jazz and soul. This one gets loud, bold, experimental in many parts, powered by guitar and unapologetic vitality, all inspired […]

Miles and Miles

Put the go-to retro label aside for a minute. The Heavy Heavy moves beyond that with a multi-layered ‘60s sound on their debut EP Life and Life Only. The way Georgie Fuller and Will Turner channel psych and mod influences with folk and soul in a timeless shimmer feels more instinctive than imitative. Then again, […]

Zachariah…And Pamela Anderson

Truth be told, your nerdy AMM host is drooling like a goblin over Hyperreal Film Club‘s upcoming scary October screenings at Hotel Vegas. This Austin-based film lovers’ club, formed in 2016, does badass pop-up screenings of independent films of every genre at various spots around town, and provides a platform for guest columnists to write […]
