Naked Giants at Empire Control Room

By: Laurie Gallardo

Grant Mullen, Gianni Aiello and Henry LaVallee were just out of high school when their 2018 debut SLUFF came sprawling out all over the place with all the things – a pop/punk/garage/surf/rock-out frenzy, with the kind of hooks that grab from the start. In various interviews with Naked Giants (well, a lot of interviews), everybody had to ask what “sluff” meant, and the band would reply “everything and nothing,” so…nailed it. It’s everything but nothing specific, pinned to nothing but many influences converging and rearranging like mad. Even their second LP The Shadow, perhaps not necessarily as sprawling, still exudes the off-center charisma as loud and proud as ever.

More is on the horizon. But you’ve got a chance to catch Naked Giants live tomorrow night, Thursday April 7, at Empire Control Room (moved from The Parish), with Louisville, KY psych/post-punk trio Wombo. Doors at 8 p.m., show at 9 p.m. Don’t miss it.

Angélica Rahe at 3Ten

The message reigns on Angélica Rahe‘s powerful 2020 debut, the regal Reina. It’s crystal clear on Rahe’s latest release, autorretrato. And, in case you missed it and needed further clarification, Rahe gently reminded listeners during her recent KUTX Studio 1A performance: She writes songs that are unabashedly, unashamedly, about femininity (in all humanity), female empowerment, […]

You get the sensation that MATTIE is not of this world. Those wondrous vocals are like nebulae, luminous, mysterious, always in motion. Though a Dallas-based artist, MATTIE’s spirit is interstellar, and a wonderful introduction to her art can be experienced on her debut EP, Jupiter’s Purse, a journey of its narrator Mhuv (pronounced “move”) exploring […]

Aldous Harding at Mohawk

There’s something about Warm Chris, the fourth full-length release by New Zealand-based artist Aldous Harding (Hannah Sian Topp), that feels as though it’s gleefully defying genre, moving in multiple directions with sound and songwriting, in a kind of free form exercise. Perhaps on some levels its construction wouldn’t make sense, but therein lies its surrealistic […]

The Deer at The ABGB

“Confetti To The Hurricane,” the gorgeous opener of The Deer‘s 2019 LP Do No Harm, recently reached one million listens on Spotify, just on the heels of the Austin’s band annual trek to Kerrville Folk Festival earlier this month. And this week, songwriter/vocalist Grace Rowland and her badass crew dropped the new track “I Wouldn’t […]
