Looney Gloomers: “Faking Paintings”

By: Jack Anderson

Whether it’s an overblown urban legend or merely a misunderstood statistic, here in the states, the month between Thanksgiving and the New Year is often thought as one of the toughest, emotionally. So we’d be remiss if we didn’t remind those who are struggling that there are resources readily available to you, all around the globe. Even the most secure folks ought to have tunes and tools close at hand rather than let a wintertime sense of doom continue to loom over their head, which leads us to Looney Gloomers.

This London-and-Copenhagen quartet hasn’t been around for too long, but in the short time since sharing their debut single last summer, Looney Gloomers has kept a steady leg up on the competition. That’s in-part thanks to the four-piece’s fearless candor about life’s less-glamorous moments; song titles like “Pleasent Panic”, “Shit on My Wall”, and “Cheer for Me” showed up on their 2021 debut full-length House of Dying Days, offering several catchy pieces of solidarity under duress. Aside from depicting an honest portrait of life exactly as is, HoDD also highlighted Looney Gloomers sonic versatility with eleven originals that lilted between lighthearted and lugubrious.

If you were to put an umbrella label on Looney Gloomers, indie rock seems like a good suit. But as heard on their EP Sunny Day Off earlier this month, the group isn’t afraid to explore depths of proto-punk and alt-pop either. So we’ll expect that same balance for their upcoming eight-track, Between Good Friends, out next Wednesday. Far from an art forgery, this morning Looney Gloomers gave us BGF‘s lead single, “Faking Paintings”. Inspired by all-too-relatable bouts with insomnia and other late-night afflictions, “Faking Paintings” is a jimp junction of rowdy rock and inner doubt that winds up from subtle indie-pop dynamics straight into a double-time punk eruption.

Barbara: “For Good Measure” (co-prod. Briana Harris)

Save for those with seemingly disposable resources, often nonprofits get stuck in their original stomping grounds. So when a local endeavor expands enough to inspire, incorporate, and impact folks far beyond their initial reach, it’s cause for celebration. That brings us back to Project Traction, spearheaded by our personal favorite philogynist audiophile – Spoon drummer/Public […]

Stephanie Rodd: “Stronger Than Ever”

For us uncultured Americans, we tend to invent a caricature when we hear about a “French songstress”. Yes, we let our assumptions automatically paint a picture of a smoky nightclub against a traumatic war torn backdrop, a slender figure in haute couture wardrobe, cigarette in one hand, microphone in the other, and lyrics toutes en […]

Wild Wren: “I’M A BIRD”

Back in the day, if you were to walk around downtown, you’d hear one predominant sound spilling out of at least every other 6th Street venue: blues rock. But as the landscape of the “Live Music Capital of the World” has evolved and diversified, frankly, so has the state of blues rock itself. And if […]

Genuine Leather: “Getting Used to the Feel”

For a lot of self-made bedroom producers, lo-fi isn’t just a creative choice; it’s a necessity. Yeah, not everyone has the technical prowess, access to equipment, or funding to match the pristine masters of their commercial radio contemporaries. But when lo-fi folks like that gain the resources to make the leap up, it’s hard to […]

Big Bill: “Emotions”

If you’ve kept posted on Austin quartet Big Bill, you know they’re in somewhat of a post-pivot position. Yeah, after years of establishing their space in the oddball-deadpan-art-punk sector, Big Bill pulled off a risky switch to more of a ’90s-style indie rock sound with their Summer 2022 full-length Public Freakout Compilation. And while we’d […]

Summer’s just over a month away. And with the birds and the bees still bringing new life into Spring, it’s a great time to appreciate fresh acts. So let’s stick a dipper into one of the latest projects to come out of Austin, Honey Luck. This Americana trio was born out of an auspicious meeting […]

Jomo & The Possum Posse: “La Quinta”

Short-term shelter ain’t just part of a discreet routine for affairs and flings. Naw, as an integral piece to any touring musician’s itinerary, lodging has found a cozy place in the songwriter space, ranging from themes of post-breakup lifelessness (“Heartbreak Hotel”), raunchy encounters (“Chelsea Hotel #2”), and tour torpor (“Holiday Inn”) to whatever the hell […]

Steel Gemini: “Only Freak”

If you’re a fan of that synth pop section of indie electronica in the ilk of Goldfrapp, Grimes, and CHVRCHES…there’s a relatively recent artist right here in town that’ll absolutely scratch that itch. And that’s Steel Gemini, the Austin-based project of singer-songwriter-producer Joy Baldwin. Ever since her December 2022 debut, Baldwin’s been a real joy […]
