Diana Burgess: “Beast” [PREMIERE]

By: Jack Anderson

Fans of neo-classical Austin outfit Mother Falcon are already familiar with the insane talent behind master cellist Diana Burgess, but even the most hardcore Falconers haven’t heard everything she has to offer. Burgess was quietly working on her solo debut when she was struck by the sudden loss of three grandparents in just one month. But rather than let the grief discourage her process, Burgess turned those powerful emotions into a vehicle of empowerment and tribute for the upcoming You Run, co-produced by Curtis McMurtry.

Diana doesn’t shy away from heavy subject matter on You Run, instead challenging listeners to keep up with Burgess’ poignant lyrics and haunting vocals, not unlike the intensity heard in Feist or Fiona Apple. You Run is out on Juneteenth, and today Diana Burgess has unfurled its eerie lead single with each layered instrument performed entirely by Burgess, “Beast”!

Marlei: “Sheesh”

There’s no question that Queen Bey’s court extends to the furthest reaches of the globe. But especially in her hometown of Houston, Beyoncé really is royalty. Her majesty’s legacy – in particular her role in the progression of R&B into trap-pop – continues to shine as a statewide piece of inspiration with its pinnacle smack […]

KindKeith: “EVERYTHING FALLS INTO PLACE” (feat. 8bit_gf)

Happy Pride Month! As an advocate, it’s beyond encouraging to hear so many openly Queer Austinites sharing their art, spreading the love, and scoring pretty good opportunities here in our fair city. In that respect, we’ve got a live show recommendation to kick off June in proper form. It comes on behalf of singer-producer KindKeith, […]

Generationals: “Strangers”

As streaming numbers become one of the defining metrics for success, you see a lot of young up-and-comers try to cover their bases by cranking out singles. Longer-standing, well-established acts, however, know that the “quality over quantity” builds stronger staying power. Just look at NOLA-born indie-garage-pop duo Generationals, who first got started in 2008. With a […]

American Dreamer: “Medicine Hat”

We all know that Austin’s far outgrown its once humble status as a cool college town. So with the current tech culture/Live Music Capital dichotomy, it’s no wonder we also often overlook institutions right in our own backyard. But we can’t forget about the Butler School of Music at UT Austin, which attracts, molds, and […]

The Best Around: “Lie to Me”

When decades of dominos fall before some of your finest work, it’s hard not to feel like fate led you to this moment. Just look at Austin songwriter Camron Rushin, whose grandfather worked with Lefty Frizzell producer Jim Beck way back in the ’50s. Within Rushin’s generation, there’d been about a ten-year-long break between artistic […]

Kris Gruen & Kendall Jane Meade: “Heaven On A Car Ride”

While nepotism in Hollywood continues to give the questionably talented mainstream opportunities, it really doesn’t exist like that within the music industry. Like, if a performer’s truly not up to snuff, a familial claim to fame ultimately won’t get them all that far. Case in point, son of iconic rock ‘n’ roll photographer Bob Gruen, […]

The Scary Jokes: “Demons of Accident”

Polymaths aren’t inherently better at their preferred forms of media…but honestly, when you start to think of modern multi-disciplinary creatives like Brandy, Donald Glover or Lucy Liu…it certainly seems like splitting interest into multiple fields can have a big payoff. So let’s talk about Pennsylvania’s Liz Lehman. On top of being an accomplished queer activist […]

Bourgeois Mystics: “Gentrification of Planet Earth”

One of the biggest obstacles to a longstanding passion project is that when you get sidelined by the harsh realities of life, sometimes it’s too tough to keep creating. And amidst skyrocketing housing costs coupled with the deficit of live opportunities in the immediate aftermath of COVID, actively gigging with a band while living within […]
