Central Texas top stories for July 31, 2024. Saharan Dust returns to Austin. A very wet July. Two tech industry groups are suing to block a 2023 Texas law restricting minors’ access to social media platforms. A barrier of buoys in the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass can remain there for now. Cisco’s Restaurant is getting a federal grant of 50-thousand dollars. The Austin Central Library is hosting a clothing swap tomorrow. Three Longhorns have medaled at the Olympics so far. The Texas football team opened fall camp today.

KUT Afternoon Newscast for May 29, 2025: City of Austin crews are in full recovery mode after last night’s storm that killed one person

The National Weather Service says it was a microburst during the storm yesterday evening that knocked down so many trees and power lines. Last night’s storm killed one person, flooded roads and businesses, and left tens of thousands of people without power. Room Service Vintage is one of many local businesses damaged by last night’s storm. There’s some improvement in drought conditions in Central Texas. Texas lawmakers are staring down a deadline to get bills passed before the session ends Monday.

The City of Austin had planned to close Barton Springs Pool an hour earlier than normal starting later this week. The Williamson County DA is joining other counties in the state in suing the Texas attorney general over new oversight rules. After some welcome rounds of rain, our chances for more are starting to drop off. Early voting is underway in the runoff election for Bastrop mayor.
