The Coolest

By: Laurie Gallardo

Heads up, hoodlum. You need this dose of ridiculously cool music that you’ll find at The Ballroom tomorrow night, Friday Sept. 2. Just think: Chaos. Recklessness. Deviant. Loud. You know. All the stuff that’s good for you.

  • Welcome to the coolest thing you’ve never seen. Or maybe you have experienced the glorious trash/glam punk party that is Lord Friday the 13th. The siblings Lenz, Sloan and Felix, deliver their badassery with wicked whimsy and frenetic flair. Claws sharp. Fangs out. I’m a PTS-Deity, baby. Rawk those bat wings.
  • Unleash the riot (grrl). ATX queer post-punk outfit Transy Warhol is obliterating gender norms and inspiring mighty mosh pits. AMM fave track: “Carve Me Out.” Though “My Head Is A Tomb” is neck-in-neck. “I don’t want to do this together / But I can’t do this alone / Everyone else is so fair weather / I’d rather be left alone…” Anthemic.
  • Do not adjust your set, fiend. Animals On TV invades the broadcast as pop-rock commingles with what they’ve branded as “upscale punk – and wherever our noses take us.” Don’t fight it. The volume on the remote is permanently locked on loud.

Doors open at 9 p.m. Show no mercy.

The way Georgie Fuller and Will Turner channel psych and mod influences with folk and soul in a timeless shimmer feels more instinctive than imitative. Then again, […]

Zachariah…And Pamela Anderson

Truth be told, your nerdy AMM host is drooling like a goblin over Hyperreal Film Club‘s upcoming scary October screenings at Hotel Vegas. This Austin-based film lovers’ club, formed in 2016, does badass pop-up screenings of independent films of every genre at various spots around town, and provides a platform for guest columnists to write […]

Bootcut

The humor is just as beautiful as the damn album, and the album is gorgeous. It starts as soon as you drop the needle on “Girls Bugging Me” on BOOTCUT. You clearly hear Afie Jurvanen, better known as Nova Scotia-based artist Bahamas, attempting to record something, but his young daughters are not having it. “…Can […]
