Questlove at Empire Control Room

By: Laurie Gallardo

Heed the AMM’s instructions: After the show with Nik Parr & The Selfless Lovers, Motenko and Beatnik Bandits at Empire Control Room this evening (doors at 8 p.m.), stick around to hang with an Academy Award-winning director – who also happens to be an incredible music artist, producer and badass DJ.

This year, Ahmir Questlove Thompson took home the Oscar for Best Documentary for Summer of Soul, featuring breathtaking long-forgotten footage of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, an epic celebration of Black history, culture and fashion.

The award-winning director is donning his DJ cap to spin tonight, Saturday April 16, at Empire Control Room. Spin-master warrior extraordinaire DJ Kay Cali joins the party, starting at 10:30 p.m.

Ode To Loneliness

The self-titled debut LP from Buffalo Nichols is the music of a wandering soul – not necessarily lost, but there’s the intrigue over how the wanderer came to be. It’s a glimpse into the journey through unfamiliar terrain, the lone wolf with no place to stay, no one you know. It’s a reflection of Nichols’ […]
