As J Soulja began focusing on his work as a rap artist, he struggled with the fact that there was no support system rooted in Austin to help rappers and hip-hop culture thrive. But, as any force majeure with an entrepreneurial mind, he set something in motion to support other artists on a similar path. It led to the creation of the monthly open mic series Pre-Roll ATX at Flamingo Cantina, where music artists of all genres are welcome to perform and network with fellow artists and others in the industry. The open mic also provides possible opportunities for other performances, including an official SXSW showcase presented by J Soulja, The Smoke Out ATX.
