It was the ultimate catharsis for Paige Renèe Berry, purging a lifetime of emotions from personal trauma into her songwriting. It was mostly to release and heal. But some of Berry’s writing coalesced into the debut album of Half Dream, Monster of Needing (2020), every word leading to a revelation of strength moving beyond mere survival.
Berry further explores human resilience amidst belittlement and condescension in the single “Too Much” (featured on today’s AMM). And the message could not be clearer: “I won’t make the choice / to choose you or lose my voice.”
Catch Half Dream at their show tonight, Saturday August 13, at Swan Dive on Red River. The excellent line-up includes the melodic embrace of Batty Jr. and more sonic gorgeousness from Burlington, VT band The Burning Sun. Doors at 9 p.m.
