Love Austin Music: Urban Heat

By: Laurie Gallardo

Brace yourself for an enthusiastic onslaught of adjectives. Today’s Love Austin Music Month feature on the AMM brings you a lightning rod of dark electro/proto-punk/new wave/synth wave/part goth/part industrial sound that is all the things but…simultaneously transcending them into something fresher. It’s the portal that leads your ears to Urban Heat. Jonathan Horstmann, Kevin Naquin and Paxel Foley started releasing Urban Heat tracks in 2019. Mad love for these pulsating analog adventure times, and more are on the horizon.

Urban Heat is part of yet another fantastic line-up in a residency show starring electro-pop trio KVN tomorrow night, Thursday Jan. 27, at the Mohawk. They’re joined by Belgrade-born Austin-based pop artist Arya. Doors open at 7 p.m. And please remember to bring your mask.

The Lovestream

The message is love. The music is funk. And when your Austin Music Minute host declares that it’s Bootsy Collins-approved, you best believe it’s for real. Henry Invisible is a virtuoso in the realm of one-man bands, layering grooves, beats, crazy-good guitar and harmonies that collectively sound more like a huge funk outfit instead of […]

Virtual Church

For your Austin Music Minute host, the fascination began with an unofficial SXSW showcase presented by Church of the Friendly Ghost several years ago in East Austin; a wonderfully strange mix of undefinable genres that made for one of the best moments of musical discovery. Created in 2003, CoTFG is an Austin-based volunteer-run arts organization […]

Welcome To The Gallery

Before the pandemic, chances were pretty good you’d catch Bonnie Whitmore working her magic at The Continental Club Gallery, maybe even sharing a bill with James McMurtry, and most definitely doing a set with Stephanie Marlar – as Marlar was taking a break from tending bar, by the way. In summary: Badasses owning the room, […]

Feel

It’s easy to lose oneself in Just Kids, the 2010 National Book Award-winning autobiographical tapestry by Patti Smith. The language is simply fluid, mesmerizing with engaging memories of the songwriter’s artistic evolution. It’s exquisite in its lucidity. So, would one be entirely surprised to find that the oft-proclaimed punk rock laureate achieves that distinctive clarity […]
