It’s easy to lose oneself in Just Kids, the 2010 National Book Award-winning autobiographical tapestry by Patti Smith. The language is simply fluid, mesmerizing with engaging memories of the songwriter’s artistic evolution. It’s exquisite in its lucidity. So, would one be entirely surprised to find that the oft-proclaimed punk rock laureate achieves that distinctive clarity in something as trivial as Instagram? Hardly. Smith is as inspiring and compassionate as ever on social media. A lot of the magic comes from her attention to detail, and the little things in everyday existence.
“This is my last day being 73, a good day,” Smith wrote in a recent post, presented in characteristic metric form that gives her IG posts an almost lyrical vibe. “Tomorrow, a full moon and a full band. Hope to feel you there.”
Smith turns 74 on this very day, December 30, and in celebration, she and her band are doing a livestream birthday performance at 8 p.m. (Central) tonight on Veeps. Your virtual ticket gets you a link to the performance.
A very Happy Birthday to you, Patti.
