Love Austin Music: KVN, Jake Lloyd & San Gabriel

By: Laurie Gallardo

One of the ways the Austin Music Minute celebrates Love Austin Music Month is by putting the spotlight on shows with all local artists – happening on any given night, which makes it so hard to choose, but what a great problem to have! Today’s AMM pick is a show tonight, Thursday Jan. 13, at the Mohawk, a residency with electro-pop trio KVN, featuring special guests Jake Lloyd, and KUTX January Artist of the Month San Gabriel (the track on today’s AMM is San Gabriel’s “Cruel”). Check with the venue for COVID safety protocol, and remember to bring your mask.

Craftsman

These are personal stories. The ground moves beneath your feet as you listen because there’s a sense that Ben Ballinger is communicating with every fiber of his being. Not only the singular voice – naturally amplified and almost defiantly not needing a microphone – but the entire heart, soul, and ravaged mind. Sometimes it feels […]

Postmodern Heart

Don’t roll your eyes. You love the schmaltz. Admit it. It started with Star Parks‘ 2016 debut track “Theoretical Girls,” and grew from there, both in sound and arrangement. Songwriter/vocalist Andy Bianculli‘s solo project evolved into a four-piece band with the release of Don’t Dwell, bringing a whole new level of swoon-worthy melancholic wonders, and […]

Language

In 2018, rappers ZEALE and Phranchyze, both artists in their own right, combined their talents and met with one of the best mentors an artist could possibly wish for, Gary Clark, Jr. This meeting of the minds laid the groundwork for what would become the 2019/2020 Austin Music Award-winning hip-hop duo, Blackillac. Since those first […]

Need A Heartbeat

They’ve done it again. Darkbird deals out rockers, as badasses do. This time, the follow-up to scorchers “Bad Self,” “Daredevil” and I Remember Feeling My Fingers Slip comes the synth-blazing rock-pop release “Heartbeat,” not so much switching gears as it is adding another winning element to the mix. And again, songwriter/vocalist Kelly Barnes owns the […]
