You need to understand that this is not your mama’s cumbia. Not by a long shot. Es diferente pero lo mismo…pero no lo es. ¿Entiendes?
Houston-based duo Gio Chamba, featuring guitarist and vocalist Giovanny Alejandro and percussionist Coffeeleaf, honor and celebrate the tradition, but with this spectacularly unique and over-the-top energy that always hits the crowds like an explosion. Cumbia is at the heart of their electrifying sound, but layered with multiple cultural and musical influences that makes it pulsate: Electronic, rap, Houston hip-hop, and something undeniably punk. (Actually, there is something so punk rock about the way Coffeeleaf beats those congas, like…damn.)
Gio Chamba will be in Austin for a show tomorrow night, Friday Dec. 3, at The Far Out Lounge and Stage, 8504 S. Congress Ave. Tiarra Girls and Los Alcos round out the bill perfectly. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the music starts at 9 p.m. And don’t be shy. Dance your butt off.
