Superfónicos: “El Adios”

By: Jack Anderson

Any disciplined musician will say that you need to keep playing your instrument to keep your chops up, even when you don’t have any gigs or group practices around the corner. So imagine being part of an eight-piece specializing in crowd-pleasing Cumbia, where no one member can fully encapsulate that dynamic fervor alone. Enter Superfónicos, whose instrument list includes a three-piece horn section, traditional Latin auxiliary percussion, two guitarists and a bassist. They’re arguably one of the most invigorating acts to catch in Austin, transcending language, tempo, and key to get the people moving…and now they’re all cooped up – something that’s proven a huge obstacle to completing their debut album.

That said Superfónicos has managed to polish off the record’s first single, one that identifies with immigrants, their children, and the painful decision to leave a home country. And although not all listeners can relate due to a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, we can all appreciate the shared vicious cycle of isolation and anxiety, not to mention the production work from Spoon’s Jim Eno on “El Adios”.

American Football: “Wake Her Up”

It’s been nearly seven years since post-rock/emo band American Football released LP3, but it wasn’t meant to be. Bella Litsa: “Angelica”

Macabre, baroque, drastic. So goes the debut album from Brooklyn’s Bella Litsa, but it’s also been at her core since she began playing the piano at six years old, finding an affinity for minor chords and rewriting pieces from songbooks to make them reflect darker, deeper tones. Paired with a spectral-like, operatic voice and inspiration […]

CorMae: “ADHD” [Live In Studio 1A]

I heard your Riot Grrrl bone was itching. Allow me. CorMae has everything I love: women with guitars and a heap of snarled attitude. And you may be wondering why they aren’t part of this summer’s Hot Summer Nights line-up. My friend, they will be on the road opening for of Montreal! But, before they […]
