Mountain Lions: “In the Valley”

By: Jack Anderson

Big cats, stand up! After half a decade of solo storytelling and songwriting, North Carolina’s Steven Diaz is ready to re-emerge with his new musical mane, Mountain Lions.

Up til now Diaz has mainly been known as one of the Cleveland indie rockers behind The Lighthouse and the Whaler but 2018 has witnessed Diaz doubling down with his pride of Americana production. Nearly a full year since Mountain Lions’ debut EP, Diaz returns from the cave with a man eater of a record, centering on themes of nature, technology and emotions. The masterfully-crafted ten-song full-length We Are comes out at the tail end of this week when listeners can expect some flourishing indie folk that’s anything but tame. You don’t have to wait all the way until Friday, unleash the beast and enter the den with a track premiering today – “In The Valley”.

Samara Joy: “Warm in December”

Well…it’s the very last Song of the Day for 2022. As mentioned before, we’ll be off for a couple weeks and returning with an exciting batch of premieres on Monday, January 2nd. But with Christmas just over a week away now, we’d be remiss if we didn’t save the very best 2022 yuletide tune for […]

Logan Mize and Jill Martin: “Wrapped”

In the small riverside town of Clearwater, Kansas, claims to fame are few and far between. Now that’s not a slight on Clearwater; I’m well aware that we can’t all reside someplace with a prestigious nickname like “The Live Music Capital of the World”. But aside from adjacency to the historic Chisholm Trail and producing […]

grentperez: “When Christmas Comes Again”

If there are two genres that are grossly misunderstood by masses (and frankly abused) through pop culture soundtracks…they’re Christmas music and Bossa Nova. For the former, we’ve been conditioned to expect schmaltzy exchanges or comic Griswold-esque catastrophe. For the latter, it’s typically a toss-up between elevator music and sexy-yet-playful moods. But of course, both can […]

David Shabani: “Holiday Blues”

It’s the final five features for Song of the Day‘s 2022 season. We’re taking a vacation for a couple weeks, but don’t fret; we’ll be back bright and early next year. Until then we’re hanging some of the very best musical mistletoe of the past months, starting off with Austin’s own David Shabani. Born in […]

Grrrl Toy: “Bite!”

The way some people talk about solo singer-songwriters…seems like there’s a lot of complicated discourse around the whole “one-person act” aspect. We sometimes idolize (and frankly fetishize) unescorted performances by the likes of Norah Jones or Billie Eilish, but honestly, even with those examples I respect the hell out of a songwriter who recognizes the […]

waverly: “overcomplicated” (feat. mHart)

Trap-pop. It’s decidedly a young person’s game. I mean sure, you’ve got “older” folks like Drake and Doja Cat purveying it on the Billboard charts but really, the target demographic and the generation who’s going to take it to the next level are people in their teens and twenties. Which brings us to Wil Brookhart. […]
