Gina Chavez: “Ella” [PREMIERE]

By: Jack Anderson

Queer, Catholic, and unabashedly fueled by feminism, multi-ethnic native Austinite Gina Chavez has heralded in unheard iterations of Latin music going back to her chart-topping 2014 acoustic bi-lingual record Up.Rooted. A decided shift from the 2007 acoustic folk-pop debut Hanging Spoons, Chavez pushed her sound even further out of the comfort zone with 2018’s R&B-soul-dominated Lightbeam, favoring the twelve-time Austin Music Award winner’s mesmerizing vocals over her once relied-upon guitar. Since starting her songwriting career over a decade back, Chavez’s undeniable talent has given her access to international tours (including appearances as a U.S. State Department cultural ambassador) and exposure through ACL Fest, NPR’s Tiny DeskFirst Listen, and All Things Considered, as well as a platform to co-found private college fund Niñas Arriba (which benefits underprivileged girls in El Salvador) alongside her wife.

With a lifetime of experiences marred by critical acclaim and infectious popularity under her belt, Gina Chavez is channeling her observations of women’s oppression into her upcoming fourth release, La Que Manda, or The Woman in Charge. True to its title, La Que Manda sees Chavez’s confidence higher than it’s ever been before, striving to create equalizing Latinx anthems for the gender-downtrodden across the globe. La Que Manda is out May 15th, but just today Gina Chavez shared a Spanish-language single featuring producer Lina Briceno and engineer Fernando Lodeiro, who’ve received two Latin Grammys and two Grammys, respectively. The result is a bold trap beat that bears witness to Chavez like we’ve never heard before and sets the stage for the full album next month, “Ella”!

David Shabani: “Holiday Blues”

It’s the final five features for Song of the Day‘s 2022 season. We’re taking a vacation for a couple weeks, but don’t fret; we’ll be back bright and early next year. Until then we’re hanging some of the very best musical mistletoe of the past months, starting off with Austin’s own David Shabani. Born in […]

Grrrl Toy: “Bite!”

The way some people talk about solo singer-songwriters…seems like there’s a lot of complicated discourse around the whole “one-person act” aspect. We sometimes idolize (and frankly fetishize) unescorted performances by the likes of Norah Jones or Billie Eilish, but honestly, even with those examples I respect the hell out of a songwriter who recognizes the […]

waverly: “overcomplicated” (feat. mHart)

Trap-pop. It’s decidedly a young person’s game. I mean sure, you’ve got “older” folks like Drake and Doja Cat purveying it on the Billboard charts but really, the target demographic and the generation who’s going to take it to the next level are people in their teens and twenties. Which brings us to Wil Brookhart. […]

Daily Worker: “Irish Goodbye”

Austin area indie-rock/guitar-pop connoisseurs ought to be well acquainted with the legendary experimental outfit Cotton Mather. The core members of Cotton Mather have kept each other company for a little over two decades, albeit non-consecutive ones. And yet you might still be unfamiliar with Cotton Mather co-founder Harold Whit Williams’ solo endeavor, Daily Worker. To […]

Superfónicos: “Primera Luz”

You’ve heard a ton about our Holiday Sing-Along over the past couple weeks, and today we’ve got good news for both Grinches and Gingerbread Architects alike. To the former, you won’t be hearing those promos after this weekend. To the latter, we’ve got an early stocking stuffer for you. That’s because shortly after the tree […]

Nick Adamo: “Lie to Me”

Every December, everyone says that this year was the absolute worst. And while I won’t debate the objective demerits of 2022, it sure has felt like an especially long turn around the sun. It’s wild to think about, but at the end of this month, we’ll technically be twice as close to 2025 as we […]
