David Rosenblad: “Like a Sagittarian Archer”

By: Jack Anderson

We don’t want to alarm anybody…but today is the last day to submit considerations for the 2025 Grammy Awards. Congrats to everyone who made the deadline, good luck to those still watching the clock and waiting on the latest batch of masters, and condolences to anyone who plain spaced on the date.

Those in that first category find themselves in good company with David Rosenblad. Which makes sense, since David’s what you’d call “hip to the industry”; on top of his status as a longtime Austin mainstay multi-instrumentalist-singer-songwriter-producer, Rosenblad’s also an accomplished TV-film composer and sound designer, not to mention co-founder of Lotus Rose Healing Arts Center, and owner of both DRM: Sir Reel Sound and local studio Thirteenth Moon. And it’s through Thirteenth Moon (which doubles as a label) that David Rosenblad’s set to break a near-half-decade release hiatus with his next album The Sound and the Meaning.

But back to the Grammys…This morning David Rosenblad enhanced his chances with The Sound and the Meaning‘s first two lead singles: “Enough is Enough” and “Like a Sagittarian Archer”. On the latter, Rosenblad adds some healthy horns to the horoscope thanks to trumpeter Wyatt Corder of Big Wy’s Brass Band and Sir Woman for a truly lively effect. Yeah “Like a Sagittarian Archer” hits a bullseye with ’70s-esque energy reminiscent of Stealer’s Wheel and Harry Nilsson.

Grammy worthy? Without getting specific with categories, we’d like to think so.

Kirk Smith: “Julian” [New Moon Remix]

Earlier this year, Austin’s Kirk Smith released “Julian,” a song about a perpetual miscreant making every bad decision and burning every bridge he crosses. While that version sported a bossa nova shuffle perfect for a dark lounge, he’s now paired with local producer Lars Goransson to remix “Julian” for a new crowd. The remix takes […]

DUCKWRTH: “Toxic Romantic”

L.A.’s DUCKWRTH has an adept knack for genre-bending around hip-hop, indie, and electronic music, massaging whatever effect he wants to achieve into his mold. His hip, danceable midtempo grooves have landed him the opening spot on two Billie Eilish tours, his music has been in shows like Insecure and Bel Air, and his song “Start […]

Brian D’Addario: “Till the Morning”

Brian D’Addario and his brother Michael came onto our radar back in 2016 as the duo the Lemon Twigs and their debut album Do Hollywood, a throwback splash of 60’s and 70’s rock and pop akin to the Beatles and the Beach Boys. Now after five Lemon Twigs albums, Brian D’Addario has released his debut […]

Jeremiah Jackson: “I Believe In You” [PREMIERE]

Austin’s Jeremiah Jackson has been shaking-up the traditional sounds of the Austin music scene for the last several years with his self-signed “Glam Daddy Blues.” Donned in one of his signature capes of many lengths and many textiles typically matched with street clothes underneath, before the band strikes a chord, you already know you’re in […]

Night Beats: “Behind the Green Door”

Danny Lee Blackwell has been performing under the moniker Night Beats since 2009, but there’s an argument that he could just as well be called “The Distiller.” Night Beats has a reputation for concocting. Blackwell can make a country song sound like a trip through the desert with Hunter S. Thompson. He can turn a […]

Mobley: “Yesterday’s Another Day” [PREMIERE]

Mobley’s career has been a fun, transformative one over the last decade. You heard that right, we’ve been talking about and championing Mobley for almost ten years. What started as writing smart R&B pop bops has grown into full concept albums revolving around racism, technology, and our future, composing cautionary tales warning of a regressing society […]
