KUT Morning Newscast for October 10, 2025: Parents raised concerns over AISD’s school consolidation plan last night

Central Texas top stories for October 10, 2025. Some AISD parents, staff and community members are expressing concerns over layoffs, academic continuity and the impact on low-income communities and emerging bilingual students if the district approves the current consolidation plan. Neighbors are uneasy about a new homeless services center near I-35 and Oltorf. The city of Austin set to remove painted street murals including one saying “Black Artists Matter” and a rainbow crosswalk. The Texas football team will play tomorrow their annual Red River Rivalry game against Oklahoma. It’s the second weekend of the Austin City Limits Music Festival, expect an increase in traffic.

KUT Afternoon Newscast for October 9, 2025: Austin City Council OKs purchase of new homeless services center

The city is buying a property in South Austin to serve as a housing navigation center. Texas Governor Greg Abbott wants cities and counties to remove any messaging or art from public roadways. Leander ISD has decided to reinstate books that had been removed from classrooms to comply with a new state law. The City of Austin is raising rates charged every month on utility bills for Austin Resource Recovery. It’s now been about a month without measurable rain at the official Austin recording sites.

Austin musicians play Palestinian songs to raise money for aid in Gaza

Viva Palestina Orchestra hopes to inspire compassion for Palestinian people and culture through their Austin shows. Last year, the musicians helped raise $115,000 for Palestinian families and aid groups. KUT’s Chelsey Zhu went to one of their recent shows.

Some Travis County voters may not be able to find themselves in the system yet. A state district judge has dismissed a lawsuit against Blueprint Data Centers and its project in Taylor. Austin activist Greg Stoker is back home. About $21 million in funding is on the way to local child care providers in Travis County. The Texas Volleyball team will face Tennessee tonight.
