Eclipse Week: Central Texas could make millions because of the eclipse. Will businesses be ready?

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on April 8th. Central Texas cities, including Austin, will be some of the best places to watch in the country. All this week, the KUT Newsroom will be reporting on this once- in- a-lifetime event in Morning Edition, All Things Considered and of course at KUT-dot-ORG. This morning, we’ll kick off our coverage by looking at how Central Texas businesses are bracing for a large influx of people. Larger cities are excited about the economic benefits…  but smaller ones may not be able to handle the crowds. 

KUT’s Maya Fawaz and Luz Moreno-Lozano having been checking in to see how central Texas cities are handling it. We’ll start with Maya out in Hays County.

KUT Afternoon Newscast for November 7, 2025: Austin ISD parents urge board to delay school closures plan less than two weeks before vote

Austin ISD’s school consolidation plans keep changing less than two weeks before a final vote is scheduled. An air traffic control staffing shortage at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport this afternoon led the FAA to issue a ground delay. UT Austin students and high school students gathered at the State Capitol today to protest what they see as a tilt to the political right in Texas education. There has been at least one traffic death on Texas roads every single day for the last 25 years. The temperature in Austin got higher today than has ever been recorded in November.

The FAA says forty airports will have to trim flights, but ABIA isn’t one of them. Police have charged five juveniles with engaging in organized criminal activity. A small-town official in Texas is using allegations of mortgage fraud to go after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Get ready for some weather extremes in the Austin area over the next several days. Not much change on the drought map released today. Prices at the gas pumps have continued their climb.
