ATLYS: “Apples And Apricots”

Encompassing a world of orchestral performance and arrangement knowledge, local string quartet ATLYS is nothing short of spectacular. As the original violist for Mother Falcon, Rita Andrade formed ATLYS in Chicago alongside violinist Jinty McTavish and twin sisters Sabrina and Genevieve Tabby, on violin and cello respectively. The result is a tranquil but powerful sound that catches the listener off-guard with how each musician effortlessly lends their solo performance to lush arrangements.

ATLYS performs alongside Mother Falcon this Wednesday at Spiderhouse. Enjoy a track recorded in the great Alaskan outdoors and featuring collaboration with former Mother Falcon fronting member Claire Puckett – “Apples And Apricots”.

Kassin: “Momento De Clareza”

At the age of 44, Rio De Janeiro bassist-producer extraordinaire Alexandre Kassin has worked on about a hundred records over the course of his nearly three-decade spanning career, but is still relatively unknown to many English-speaking music lovers. The native Carioca first got his start in the local Rio scene performing in Acabou La Tequila and later in the more production-experimental trio X+2. Kassin was the one to conceptualize the internationally-renowned big band Orchestra Imperial, who he continues to perform with but today Kassin plants another seed in his solo career.

Finding inspiration in dreams and the surreal but anchoring itself with trusty production techniques, Kassin’s full-length Relax features eleven new tunes that sonically flow between traditional Brazilian pop, soul and classic Latin rhythms while lyrically addressing issues like politics, substance abuse, and mortality. Relax was released just today, so wrap up the work week by streaming the whole album but start off right now with a deceptively upbeat arrangement coupled with Kassin’s haunting tale of dodging fate by missing a flight on a plane that crashed in 1996 with “Momento De Clareza”.

Ashley Campbell: “Cry”

As the youngest of Glen Campbell’s eight children, Ashley Campbell‘s standard of quality for songwriting has always been understandably high. Following in her father’s footsteps, Campbell channelled her interest in music by learning the banjo and eventually performing in the senior Campbell’s touring band during his 2011-2012 farewell tour. Campbell released a few solo singles in the years after that tour, and after the passing of the late country legend last year, Campbell doubled down on her own songwriting.

The result is The Lonely One – a baker’s dozen of original arrangements written and performed by Campbell, and produced by her brother Cal. The Lonely One cements Campbell’s merits as a solo artist, whose talent speaks for itself despite it’s connection to the country great. Parched for a piece of The Lonely One? Campbell’s debut full-length comes out at the tail end of this week but you can get a glimpse right now with “Cry”.

Prophet: “Tonight” feat. Nite Jewel

Following thirty years of aural absence, underground Bay Area producer, instrumentalist and vocalist Prophet returns to a much larger sonic stage. Previously known only to a niche crowd, Prophet first caught the attention and adoration of Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf with his 1984 debut Right On Time – a record showcasing Prophet’s lo-fi, synth-saturated boogie style and vigorous vocal performances.

Prophet revitalizes his elegant ’80s essence with his upcoming full-length Wanna Be Your Man, a robust collection of seven new compositions and three classics that transcend time with a modern but undeniably retro-tinged sound. Wanna Be Your Man doesn’t come out until Friday but you can enjoy a free download of one of the oldies-turned-new and featuring L.A.’s Nite Jewel (who had previously covered the song on her own) and boogie ’til the sun sets with “Tonight”.

The Buttertones: “You And Your Knife”

Finding their origins seven years ago as a triplet of music school misfits, Los Angeles’ The Buttertones have since evolved into a near-quixotic rock quintet. The Buttertones first showed their psych-influenced stuff over a number of releases since 2013 and really shined last year with their first full-length, Gravedigging. Rolling with the momentum of Gravedigging, The Buttertones just today released its darker, musically sophisticated sister album, Midnight In A Moonless Dream.

What was destined to be a slim six-song EP has evolved into eleven robust arrangements, showcasing The Buttertones’ increasingly organic songwriting process and a string section to support that! Last week The Buttertones caused some controlled chaos out at Coachella but you can ditch the FOMO right now with a free download of “You And Your Knife”.

The Wheelwrights: “Travelin’ On”

If there’s one word to define the multi-instrumental, multi-songwriter partnership that is The Wheelwrightsit’s “handmade”. Since the release of their self-titled EP just three years ago, this Austin-based acoustic Americana trio has made the most of their shared passion and dedication to their craft with each new piece and performance. Last year The Wheelwrights released their debut full-length album A Forest In Trees, a baker’s dozen of songs paired with a unique piece of visual art to create a magnificent model of multimedia.

The Wheelwrights will be playing this Friday at the Cactus Cafe along with Margaret Chavez and you can let The Wheelwrights carry you through your Tuesday travels with the third of thirteen tracks on A Forest In Trees – “Travelin’ On”.

Jonathan Terrell: “Thinking About You” (Live in Studio 1A)

Longtime KUTX listeners are likely to recognize the whistling, lyrically wistful sound of native Austinite Jonathan Terrell. Formerly known just for fronting Not In The Face, Terrell has been crushing it as a solo performer for the past couple years in the local scene, regionally and abroad internationally. Terrell’s transition from country singer to rock frontman back to solo country is evident with the ever growing maturation of his compositions and powerful live shows.

Terrell is set to tear up this week’s edition of the Wild Texas Music Series, Friday at 5pm out at the Desert Store Distillery in Driftwood, just a stone’s throw away from the Live Music Capital. Jonathan Terrell last joined us in Studio 1A one year ago to the month – relive that local love before making it out to Driftwood this weekend!

Dead Meadow: “I’m So Glad”

Two decades since their humble origins, D.C. stoner rock outfit Dead Meadow is still blowing minds and rupturing ear drums! Coinciding with their 20-year anniversary and the release of their eighth album The Nothing They Need back in March, Dead Meadow has been enjoying a coast-to-coast concert tour, concluding this weekend right here in Austin for Levitation Fest.

Dead Meadow kicked off their leg of Levitation last night at Barracuda and you can see them performing 5:45pm tomorrow at Beerland. Bummed that you have to go a whole day without sounds from Dead Meadow? That’s where you’re wrong! Immerse yourself and show some appreciation for stoner rock with “I’m So Glad”

L.A. Witch: “Drive Your Car”

Despite a six-year release history Los Angeles trio L.A. Witch only recently put their full hex on listeners with the debut nine-track self-titled album towards the tail end of 2017. The dark, raw energy that L.A. Witch conjures with each punk-inspired composition is impressive to say the least, especially coming from just three members.

These distortion-dabblin’, reverb-rarin’ West Coast rockers will be making a pit stop in the Live Music Capital as part of their national tour this Friday night at Empire Control Room as part of Levitation Fest. Check out the music video for L.A. Witch‘s lead single and put your ear into gear with L.A. Witch’s “Drive Your Car”

Stimulator Jones: “Tempt Me With Your Love”

Raised in Roanoke, Virginia, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Samuel Lunsford AKA Stimulator Jones thrives sonically with his genre-inclusive vintage production. Exposed to a wide variety of musical styles at a young age, Lunsford initially found his calling performing in rock bands and producing melodic hip-hop but ultimately found himself naturally drawn towards ’80s R&B and alas Stimulator Jones was born.

Stimulator Jones’ debut album Exotic Worlds and Masterful Treasures releases this Friday, eleven songs of analogue, downtempo delight showcasing Lunsford’s lush production and multi-instrumental performance. Ease your adjustment back into the work week with this delicious ’80s-inspired synth-heavy head-bobber, the final track from Exotic Worlds and Masterful Treasures, “Tempt Me With Your Love”

Tomar & The FCs: “Shine Your Light” (Live in Studio 1A)

In the grand scheme of his career, Tomar Williams only recently pivoted from hip hop producer to return to his roots as a knockout soul singing frontman. Residing and performing regularly right here in Austin, Tomar & The FCs bring a new energy to a classic soul sound. A couple years ago Tomar & The FCs were featured as KUTX Artist of the Month back when they released their debut full-length Heart Attack, culminating in several KUTX features.

Tomar & The FCs have a new album in the works, due for release later this year and they’ll be topping off tonight’s non-campsite performances at Old Settler’s Music Festival on the Bluebonnet Stage from 10:45pm all the way to midnight. Prepare yourself for a lack of light pollution and compensate with Tomar’s bright aura and infectious positivity with the live Studio 1A Recording of “Shine Your Light”.

Jamestown Revival: “Love Is A Burden” (Live in Studio 1A)

This Magnolia, Texas-born troubadour team is ready once again to return to their roots! Sharing vocal responsibilities, Jamestown Revival is fronted by Zach Chance on piano, Jonathan Clay on guitar, and supplemented by drums and bass to create a unique melding of folk, rock, blues, country and of course, Americana.

Jamestown Revival is no stranger to Studio 1A, having made a couple appearances since their 2011 origins, and later this week they’ll be playing Friday night, 7PM on the Original Black’s BBQ Stage at Old Settler’s Music Fest. The folks of Jamestown Revival have been working every day on a new album to be revealed later this year, so fingers crossed that they’ll be performing some of the new stuff out at Old Settler’s! Even in the off chance that they’re not, treat yourself right now to a Studio 1A performance of “Love Is A Burden” and just try to keep your foot from stompin’!

Scenery: “Lady Bird”

Apropos to their name, Austin indie synthpop quintet Scenery has comfortably spaced out their live shows and studio releases since the premiere of their debut single “Radio Beach” back in 2015. While guitarist and vocalist Richard Kentopp takes charge of the lyrics, his four fellow bandmates share plenty of responsibility in composing, recording and mixing Scenery’s unique tones. Following the release of the eleven-song LP Two Stares at the beginning of last year, Scenery has scaled it down for intimate brand new material in the form of a four-track cassette tape.

Scenery puts a mark on your musical map with said cassette tape, entitled Lady Birdthis Friday night at the Mohawk along with Black Books, Kay Odyssey, and Ramesh. Scenery last joined us in Studio 1A back in 2016 and this afternoon’s taped Studio 1A session airs tonight at 9pm. No need to wait several hours to hear some of the new stuff; enjoy the title track from Lady Bird right now and its lyrical ode to finding and losing love in the 1990s Austin music scene.

Makeness: “Who Am I to Follow Love”

Scottish producer and vocalist Kyle Molleson AKA Makeness has blurred the lines between avant garde experimental songwriting and plain old four-to-the-floor dance music. Following the release of a couple humble EPs, Makeness just introduced the world to his biggest undertaking yet, the eleven-track full-length Loud PatternsTrue to the album’s name, most of the compositions hearken back to the Detroit and Chicago techno and house scenes by incorporating elements from a wide array of genres ranging from acid house to minimalist to noise. In support of the Loud Patterns release last Friday, Makeness kicks off an international tour beginning in the United States next week performing over a dozen dates alongside like-minded synth masters Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Some of the more mellow selections from Loud Patterns showcase Molleson’s vocals at the forefront, including the lead single that features London-based Babeheaven singer Nancy Andersen – “Who Am I to Follow Love”.

Arthur Yoria: “I Just Want To Sit Here”

Bilingual singer-songwriter Arthur Yoria quickly established himself as one of Houston’s most tantalizing acts seventeen years ago with the release of his self-titled EP. Nearly a generation and several albums later, Yoria still pleases crowds with his masterful use of harmonica, drum loops and keyboards on top of his essential guitar and vocals to form a unique new wave indie Americana ambiance. Yoria’s latest offering is the full-length After You, nine tracks that cover a whole spectrum of sounds as well as Yoria’s seemingly effortless multi-instrumental and lyrical talent. Yoria’s causin’ a ruckus this Friday night at the Cactus Cafe for the physical release of After You, and you can enjoy his rustic yet spacey sound right now with “I Just Want To Sit Here”.

Shy Beast: “For Now” (Live in Studio 1A)

For three years, vocalist/keyboardist Marieclaire Glaeser (AKA MC) earned fans both locally and nationally with her quintet MCG but something wasn’t quite right. It was only last year that Glaeser adopted the new project name Shy Beast – signifying a musical maturation and a sonic shift towards dreampop. Glaeser’s impressive-to-say-the-least vocal range and carefully-crafted compositions guided Shy Beast through their debut self-titled EP and live performances ever since. Shy Beast is set to premiere their new single “My Stride” next month but you can catch them this Friday night at Geraldine’s. Shy Beast shied out of their corner just after their transformation last November with a Studio 1A performance that captured the beast in its new form track after track – not the least of which is “For Now”.

Michael Rault: “I’ll Be There”

Montreal’s Michael Rault is celebrating a dreamy new chapter in his up-and-coming career! This Daptone-affiliated singer-songwriter first emerged three years ago with his debut full-length Living Daylight but following a period of touring, Rault decided to re-tool his recording process. Emulating the minimalist techniques used by power pop and folk rock groups of the ’70s, Rault’s new album is ten tracks of retro pop rock reverie. Rault joined us not too long ago for SXSW and his sophomore album It’s A New Day Tonight comes out May 18th. Rault released the music video for his lead single last month and you can enjoy a free download today of “I’ll Be There”.

Fastball: “Just Another Dream” (Live in Studio 1A)

Fastball fanatics across Texas have another opportunity to see some of their two-decade-old rock favorites played live! KUTX listeners and Austin music aficionados are quick to peg Fastball as somewhat of a cornerstone of the local music scene, with six studio albums recorded and released since their debut all the way back in 1996. Fastball intermittently emerges for a quick series of shows between releases and because eight years has passed between the last two albums, the need to see them when they do perform live is all too real.

Fortunately for fans old and new, Fastball plays tomorrow night at 3Ten along with fellow ’90s rock genre-benders Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers before kicking off a quick regional tour across their native Lone Star State with stops in The Colony, Houston and New Braunfels. Can’t make it to one of their shows? No trouble – Fastball came by KUTX’s Studio 1A last April for a live broadcast session and now almost exactly one year later you can enjoy a free download of some of their most recent live material from the latest album Step Into Light – “Just Another Dream”.

Poly Action: “Defeated Red Bells”

Poly Action powers through the next phase of their career this week with a new release and a tour! While performing in another local quartet, Lola Tried (of which he is still a prominent member), guitarist and vocalist Ray Garza began Poly Action as a venue for his own songwriting only relatively recently. Just last year Poly Action rocked their way through their debut album, the aptly titled ten-song Baby’s First Rock N’ Roll, had been playing frequent local sets well before then and have ever since. Though the group is still young, 2018 is certifiably no longer baby’s first rodeo; now Poly Action is set to embark on a national tour in the next week with stops in Nashville, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Arlington.

Poly Action touts their tour kickoff 9PM this Wednesday at Hotel Vegas with supporting acts (and fellow Studio 1A veterans) PR Newman and Mean Jolene. Poly Action also enjoyed their sophomore release today with the unfurling of Defeated Red Bells, two B-sides from their debut album recording session that are still A-sides in our hearts. Don’t be defeated by all the April Fool’s ruses you fell for yesterday – Defeated Red Bells is a free download (no foolin’)!

Henry + The Invisibles: “Let’s Bounce”

Henry and his appropriately unseen Invisibles are back with some hoppin’ and happenin’ new tunes! Well…to be fair, they never left…but nonetheless, Mr. Roland himself took time out of his constant live set schedule to release something just for the fans, and let’s be honest, the world at large. Paying homage to not only the roller skate era of disco, but also his own skating experience, Roland celebrates the release of his new single tomorrow night at The North Door along with lots of surprises. Instead of holding off for a whole day let’s get right into Henry’s new single – “Let’s Bounce”…oh, let’s.
