You’ve got soul, R&B, funk…and more soul, brought to your eager ears by a former Detroit DJ and a budding songwriter with a collaborative and performance resume spanning more than 10 years Two stars are in the spotlight at a show presented by KUTX 98.9 tomorrow night, Tuesday Nov. 2 at the Historic Scoot Inn, 1308 E. 4th St. Time to indulge:
- It’s true. Mayer Hawthorne was spinning tracks and stirring up hip-hop beats as a DJ in the Motor City back in the day before bringing that mastery to his soul creations on four superb LP’s. He’s also a much sought-after producer (and multi-instrumental madman), is one half of the awesome funk collab Tuxedo with hip-hop producer Jake One, and launched his own label, Big Bucks, in 2019.
- How is it that more people are not aware of the brilliance of India Shawn? Dig into the endless catalogue of Shawn’s SoundCloud and know that it barely scratches the surface of the songwriter’s endless accomplishments, including penning for Chris Brown, Diddy-Dirty Money, El Debarge, Keri Hilson, Monica and many others. Her most recent projects include working with Anderson Paak‘s live outfit The Free Nationals (check their fantastic NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert).
Doors for the big show open at 6:30 p.m. Please check the Scoot Inn’s website for COVID safety protocol.
