JaRon Marshall has honed his skills as a musician and producer since he first got his hands on sequencers and DAWs (digital audio workstation) at the age of 14. This shaped the sophisticated composer we hear behind the infectious beats and multi-layered funk/jazz/soul/hip-hop coalescence of The Gold Tapes: Vol. 1-3 and monumental EP The Black Power Tape. Yet Marshall is the first to admit that a majority of the creativity fueling his direction comes from his multiple collaborations with other artists. Vocalist/songwriter James Robinson worked alongside Marshall on The Black Power Tape, while The Gold Tapes LP includes appearances by Iram Reyes, Nnedi Agbaroji, and Adrian Quesada. Speaking of the latter, Marshall’s skills figure prominently as keyboardist and contributing songwriter of Black Pumas. All of it keeps Marshall on his game.
Following a stellar performance at Exploded Drawing‘s recent showcase last week, JaRon Marshall + The Collective have a show coming up tomorrow night, Wednesday August 24, at The Pershing, 2415 E. 4th St. Doors open at 7 p.m.
