Love & Algorhythms

By: Laurie Gallardo

The world was just beginning to shut down due to the pandemic as Seratones returned home from their Power tour. The only way the band was able to work on new music was through Zoom sessions. Yet over the course of lockdowns and limitations, and dark moments both collective and internal, the energy coming from Love & Algorhythms feels jubilant and transformative. The vocals are exuberant, celebrating living in the moment. Powerhouse front woman A.J. Haynes describes Love & Algorhythms as a protest album for current times, focused on getting present and weathering the difficult moments with abundant joy, a combination of self-nurturing and direct engagement. It’s a spirit honoring Hayes’ multiple inspirations, from writers Audre Lorde and bell hooks, to the music of Alice Coltrane and Donna Summer.

“There’s this American ideal of the pursuit of happiness, but I don’t want to chase happiness,” Hayes says. “I want bliss and wholeness. This world we’ve created, that we were able to discover through working through ourselves – I want to sit in this world longer.”

Seratones is back in Austin for a performance tonight, Wednesday Sept. 28, at 3Ten at ACL Live, with special guest Chief Cleopatra opening the show. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the music starts at 8:30 p.m.
