Since moving to Austin in the early aughts, your Austin Music Minute host got a lesson on what is actual “church” day, which is not Sunday but Saturday. Going to church on Saturday meant starting the day marveling over fascinating clips and blips about dead celebrities on DJ Harris’ Graveside Service; soaking in the fantastical sonic adventures of Jay Robillard‘s The Lounge Show and the golden vintage musical oddities of Dennis Campa‘s Adventures In Sound; and, of course, making nighttime the right time for ’60s-and-beyond underground essentials with Scott Gardner‘s always epic Stronger Than Dirt. Holy…hell.
Community radio hub KOOP, the airwaves yin to UT student-run KVRX‘s yang sharing the 91.7 FM frequency, has provided speciality programming to Austin ears for 27 years, from a far-reaching range of musical genres, to shows discussing various community and cultural issues. Volunteers are at the heart of pretty much every carefully curated presentation you hear on KOOP. And the station continues its evolution. Special AMM shoutouts to Miss Manners and Ryan Blake‘s Hip Hop Hooray; a tip o’ the hat to the mighty Strictly Bluegrass crew; dark goth hearts to DJ’s V and AsuraSunil for Darkest Before Dawn; and cheers to ever-awesome DJ Marc for all the sweet, sweet sounds of Ear Candy 2.0.
Join the KOOP crew as they celebrate 27 years and counting with a big party tonight, Friday June 10, at Antone’s. Catch live sets by Kalu and The Electric Joint (a preview of the new track “Garden of Eden” is featured on today’s AMM), Money Chicha and Riders Against the Storm. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show begins at 8 p.m.
