Smiling With No Teeth has been labeled everything from avant-hip-hop to alt.-funk, but Genesis Owusu is not preoccupied with genres. For the Ghanaian-born/Canberra, AU-based artist, creating the album was an overall cathartic experience, and an opportunity to be candid about depression and racism. Time to reclaim the dreaded “black dog” by hitting with the hardest grooves. (Self)-knowledge is power.
