Jalesa Jessie is a boss. If you don’t know, it’s Chief Cleopatra the AMM is talking about. The KUTX Artist of the Month alumnus and recent Sonic Guild 2023 grant recipient nominee made a big debut with the EP Luna (2022), featuring Walker Lukens as producer, and Curtis Roush and Jack O’Brien (The Bright Light Social Hour) contributing to the track “Fortuity.” These collaborations were an unexpected surprise in the journey, but Cleo already knew her music was moving toward a more universal vision. Hip-hop, R&B, pop and funk will always have a place in Cleo’s creative inspiration, though rock is at the root of the germination.
A full-length release looms on the not-so-distant horizon. And following a great opening set for Danielle Ponder at Antone’s, Chief Cleopatra is in the spotlight tomorrow night, Thursday June 1, at Stubb’s indoor venue, following a sold out performance by Bryson Tiller in Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater. Doors at 10:30 p.m. Space will be limited. Get on it.
