Best of Many Worlds

By: Laurie Gallardo

Atlas Maior‘s music is essentially a love letter. The Austin band’s continued exploration of maqamat (Middle Eastern modal system), combined with multiple and often improvisational international musical traditions, makes the entire experience so engaging. Indian, Middle Eastern, Latin American, and American Jazz all pulsate through the veins of every Atlas Maior melody, rhythm and instrumentation.

Imagine opening for artists like Vieux Farka TourĂ©, Kaki King and Tal National, but just as special is performing right alongside artists you admire. This weekend provides such an opportunity when Atlas Maior joins musician, singer and collaborator Ali Pervez Mehdi for a live stream show starting at 2 p.m. (Central) tomorrow, Sunday July 12, on Atlas Maior’s Facebook and Instagram.

Crew Vs. Crew

In any exploration of the origins of bboy subculture and its crucial role in the development of hip-hop, one of the best rabbit holes to dive into is the work of Bronx street photographer Ricky Flores. The stark black and white imagery from these formative years carries a unique fluidity and exuberance, but Flores was […]
