Having a film score performed live at a screening makes it all the more electrifying – and, in the case of reimagining the silent western The Return of Draw Egan, even more hysterically funny. With a script rewritten by Mac Blake and Carlos LaRotta (Master Pancake Theater), the lively tale was given proper treatment with essential mood-setting pieces by Ennio Morricone, as performed by Montopolis. Not your granddaddy’s western, hombre.
More treats are in store from the Austin-based indie chamber music group, led by composer Justin Sherburn. Did you know that Draw Egan will have a sequel?? Yes, western lovers, it’s A Fistful of Tango coming soon, once again wickedly reworked by the twisted minds of Master Pancake, and featuring violinist Leigh Mahoney (Tosca Tango Orchestra, Tosca String Quartet) joining Montopolis for the musical escapade.
Get a preview when you see Montopolis on the next East Austin Piano Shop livestream, starting at 7:30 p.m. (Central) this Wednesday, April 24, on YouTube. Sherburn and Mahoney will play selections from the new score, adapting traditional tango arrangements by composer Glover Gill, with accompaniment by Esquina Tango dancers Monica Caivano and Gustavo Simplis. Then Montopolis will also revisit parts of the Draw Egan score. Beyond cool. Don’t miss it.
