Juneteenth: Are We Really Free?
Juneteenth: Are We Really Free?
By: Miles Bloxson
Juneteenth is celebrated annually on the 19th of June to mark the date some of the last enslaved people in the Confederacy became free. The newest national holiday is known by many names, Freedom Day, Liberation Day, Emancipation Day, and Jubilee Day. June 19 is a commemoration of the end of chattel slavery in the United States, marking the day enslaved people in Texas were finally freed — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
“Juneteenth: Are We Really Free?” is an hour-long audio documentary that listens to Black Austinites tell the history of this celebrated day, what the holiday means and asks them to answer this difficult question.
