Shungudzo: “It’s a good day (to fight the system)”

Hopefully it’s not news to you that today is Election Day here in the United States, and while the lines may be long, trust me, you still have time to vote. And if you’re looking for a perfect playlist addition to tide you over, either while waiting to cast your ballot or just to pass the time until a decision is made, look no further than Shungudzo.

Born Alexandra Shungudzo Govere in rural Zimbabwe and now calling California her home, the songwriter-producer began releasing her variety of folk and pop back in 2017,  quickly attracting features from well-known artists outside of the US, primarily from the UK and Europe. Last Friday Shungudzo dropped a concise but conceptually brilliant and empowering EP, I (motsi), and the album opener, “It’s a good day (to fight the system)”, will do its best to keep your head bobbin’ through the foreseeable future.

  • They both talk about D.J. Funkmaster Flex’s recent comments about T.I., and discuss how they feel like his opinion is just another expression of New Yorkers’ disdain for Southern hip-hop.
  •  Fresh states the Unpopular Opinion that Bryson Tiller is overrated.
  • In his Confucius Says segment Confucius encourages all people, especially Black people, to exercise their right to vote in this election.

Texas Standard: November 2, 2020

One final push before election day 2020. Where do we stand? And what should Texans be looking for as returns come in tomorrow? Reporters from our partners in Dallas, Houston, El Paso and more with the latest on the general election as we prepare for a final vote in the general election and what many expect to be a long final tally. Also the many issues voters will be deciding across the Lone Star State that often get squeezed out by the big banner headlines. Plus a celebration of 20 years of life in outer space and the death of a very good machine puts some El Paso musicians in the international spotlight. Those stories and so much more today on the Texas Standard:

Reunion

Project ATX6, the local nonprofit that brings Austin music to different parts of the world, was ready to charge ahead with this year’s six selected musicians for one more trip, The Great Escape in Brighton, when the pandemic hit. And it hit hard. Everything came to a screeching halt. All travel for the crew was cancelled, as well as what would have been this year’s Project ATX6 grand finale performance here in Austin.

However, the grand finale took on a new form, a livestream reunion concert and watch party featuring performances by this year’s artists: Kathryn Legendre, Alesia Lani, Mike St. Clair (Pocket Sounds), Evan Charles (Altamesa), Leslie Sisson (Moving Panoramas), and Jonathan Horstmann (Urban Heat). Each set was filmed live at Mosaic Sound Collective in East Austin, and the livestream also includes a preview of the project documentary, and interviews with the musicians and Project ATX6 founder Chris Brecht – hosted by none other than yours truly, your Austin Music Minute maven.

The Project ATX Reunion Concert livestream begins at 7:30 p.m. (Central) tonight, Monday Nov. 2, on Facebook Live.

Tekla Waterfield & Jeff Fielder: “Let There Be”

Aside from the obvious connection of well, their marriage, Seattle’s Tekla Waterfield & Jeff Fielder have had their musical collaborations in the books since Waterfield’s 2018 LP The Curtain Falls. Multi-instrumentalist/producer Fielder’s spent years cutting his teeth across the globe as touring guitarist for acts like Indigo Girls and Mark Lanegan, while Waterfield’s established a legacy of pro-feminist activism that pairs perfectly with the songwriter’s take on the Americana genre.

Waterfield & Fielder’s upcoming debut as a duo, Trouble In Time, finds the couple coalescing elements of soft rock, indie folk, and soul into a seamless sound. Trouble In Time is out next January and its lead single “Let There Be” will help you appreciate being in the moment, no matter how tough it may be.
