Ciranda

By: Laurie Gallardo

There’s an incredible story behind the recording of Ley Line‘s latest single “Ciranda,” which will be included on their forthcoming release We Saw Blue, out this fall. Then again, at the heart of Ley Line’s collective creative soul, there is always a beautiful story behind the inspiration.

The name Ciranda comes from a traditional musical style from Northeastern Brazil, created from the strong spiritual connection that the community has to the ocean The specific origins stem from a song written by a man named Capiba, titled “Ciranda e Frevo,” about a nearby beach named Praia do Janga and the presence of the Orixás, or Afro-Brazilian deities representing the world’s elements.

Ley Line’s Emilie Basez learned the song in 2013 with bandmate Kate Robberson, following a trip to Brazil. Then, in another interesting twist of fate, during a visit to the very beach the song references, Basez was connected to the widow of the song’s composer, and was able to receive permission to record the song.

This weekend’s in-person show at The Far Out Lounge has been cancelled, due to the rise of COVID-19 cases. However, Ley Line invites you to join them for their live stream performance this Saturday night, June 27, at 8 p.m. (Central). The purchase of your virtual ticket provides a link to the stream. If you already purchased tickets for the live show, you can exchange them for the live stream link.
