Lolita Lynne: “Enslaved” (feat. Yvonne Lambert)

It’s Monday. We’re officially one week into 2018. It may already not feel quite like your year so far. Thankfully the latest warm stylings of Austin’s Lolita Lynne are coming to a stage near you this week! Founded in 2016 around the titular frontwoman and her propensity for Latin-influenced arrangements and compelling vocal melodies, Lynne is now backed by guitar, bass, drums and keys. Lolita Lynne recently followed up their debut album In The Dark with a release at the very end of last year – their sophomore six-track Fools Moon.

Engineered by Adrian Quesada, Fools Moon packs a punch in terms of production, sonic clarity and composition, even from the get-go with the first song – one which features The Octopus Project’s Yvonne Lambert – “Enslaved”. Check out the record release show for Fools Moon is this Friday at Barracuda and listen to Lolita Lynne on KUTX in the mean time.

Best of “Higher Ed:” When Is It Right To Transfer Schools

Note: This episode was originally released on September 17, 2017.

Sometimes, a relationship doesn’t feel like a good match. That feeling can crop up in personal relationships, as well as in our relationships with schools. In this episode of KUT’s podcast Higher Ed, KUT’s Jennifer Stayton and Southwestern University President Dr. Ed Burger answer a question from a listener curious about how to know when it is time to move on.

It might seem like a pretty simple question, but there are actually quite a few factors to contemplate. Ed and Jennifer discuss both the practical and emotional elements students and families should consider when making a decision about a transfer. And yes, it can be a little like deciding whether to stay with a boyfriend or girlfriend or break up. Listen to the full episode for their discussion and to hear the solution to a puzzler about those elusive matching pairs of socks. Hint: No socks mysteriously disappeared in a dryer!

This episode was recorded Aug. 10, 2017.

What’s It Called? Hyperloop!

Imagine hurtling across Texas in a high-tech, high-speed vehicle. You cold get so much done, or just get there faster, all the while mocking those who are still stuck in highway traffic. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem,

Outcome Bias

We’re biased towards what we pay attention to, and we generally pay more attention to outcomes rather than process. Yet, if we really want to learn from our mistakes or our successes, we have to look at the process as well.

On this edition of Two Guys on Your Head, Dr. Art Markman and Dr. Bob Duke take on outcome bias.

Texas Standard: January 4, 2017

A big deadline approaches in Congress, this one affecting more than 120-thousand Texans. We’ll explore why the so-called Dreamers are in limbo. And another big issue in Texas: the high rate of moms dying during or shortly after giving birth. We’re getting new information about the problem. Also, if you’re decluttering for the New Year you may find old technology that’s no longer useful. We’ll look at what you’re using now that could be next to fall by the wayside. And a plate of Texas BBQ just isn’t complete without a cold glass/can or bottle of… what? A discussion on the best B-B-Q beverages. Plus we’ll introduce you to a Texas superintendent who has turned around a district despite some real challenges. Those stories and more today on the Standard:

King Warbler: “Lighter Fluid”

Sad Piano Boy Jack Van Norman helms his current project King Warbler with regal charm and squire-like modesty, plinking out some of the most infectious, melancholic singer-songwriter rock this side of your neighborhood’s coolest coffee shop. If you’ve spent any time going to shows in the Red River district, you’ve likely caught their set or at least seen their name on a bill, adding their early-Ray-LaMontagne spice to bills that usually host the fuzzier or poppier facets of the Austin indie-rock gem. With new music on the horizon, King Warbler kicks off 2018 wading in the deluge of free week, playing tunes that already keep the souls of their fans sad and warm, and new ones ready to tug on your melan-collar.

The opening notes of “Lighter Fluid,” immediately transport you back to a time where Ben Folds Five and Damien Rice ruled the indie scene with broken heartstrings and smooth-yet-aching vocal runs. Keys and strings add buttery grace to the song’s make-up, which swell up and down to keep your tear ducts teased and your soul feeling like its been hugged by the day’s most needed cup of coffee.

“Lighter Fluid” appears on Rosanky, out now via the group’s Bandcamp. Catch King Warbler at the Sidewinder TONIGHT with Mountebank, Batty Jr, and AlexAlco.

-Taylor Wallace// Host, Thursdays 8p-11p & Saturdays 2p-6p; Producer, Eklektikos with John Aielli

And a question for you: hows that New Year’s Resolution going? Feel like you’re about to burn through your self-control already? Some advice from Texas researchers about to keep your motivation battery running. Those stories and a whole lot more on todays Texas Standard:

Texas Standard: January 2, 2018

2018 means a slew of new laws are going into effect. Are there any that effect you? We’ll have the details. Also, remember the failing blowout preventer from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill? A proposed rollback in regulations targets drilling in places like the Gulf of Mexico. Plus: a dispute between Texas and New Mexico over water from the Rio Grande is going to country’s highest court. We’ll have the details. And a Texas high school won back to back to back state championships in 2017. But the school’s story of winning intertwines with a story of loss, we’ll have the details. And the why US may need to change its strategy to combat drug cartels on the other side of the border. Those stories and so much more today on the Texas Standard:

Stonefield: “Delusion”

Let’s face it…2017 was a pretty rough year. Despite all the difficulties, tensions and anxieties that came out of the past year, Australian four-piece Stonefield managed to squeeze a bit of excellence out at the tail end of 2017. Comprised of sisters Amy, Hannah, Sarah, and Holly Findlay, Stonefield has four releases, international tours and opening spots for the likes of Meat Puppets and Fleetwood Mac already under their belt. The conclusion of 2017 saw the release of a new, heavier, prog-inspired single “Delusion” – one that gets out of Stonefield’s comfort zone with a welcome sonic shift. You can listen to Stonefield here on KUTX and you can catch them when they perform later this year as part of Levitation Fest!
