The AMM has a couple of (very abridged) definitions to give you some perspective on today’s featured artist. First, there’s archeology, stories from the excavation and analysis of various objects; and surrealism, creativity stemming from the unconscious mind. In a way, renown cellist and songwriter Helen Gillet applies both to her work as a self-described “surrealist-archeologist” exploring the endless fluidity of sound and art, and from that, weaving new stories in her ongoing musical journey. The New Orleans-based composer intertwines different musical styles and cultures, from classical and various French chansons to jazz, rock, pop and funk, with innovative use of cello and looping technology.
Gillet will be joined by Lindsey Verrill and Jeff Johnston (Little Mazarn), and cellists Nino Soberon and Joey Reyes for a live performance tomorrow, Tuesday July 6, at Cloud Tree Studios, 3411 E. 5th St. The show begins at 8 p.m. Yet another extraordinary sonic experience to add to your list of must-see performances.
