Magic (Music) Moments

By: Laurie Gallardo

Hearts in the eyes, and hearts all a-flutter… Of course KUTX is in love – with all this incredible music! And we’re here to remind you of the importance of supporting our local musicians. It’s the very root – the heart and soul, if you will – of why Austin is known as the Live Music Capital of the World, darlin’.

Here are just a few shows happening in our city tonight, perfect for your Valentine’s (or anti-Valentine’s) Day celebrations:

Love and Giants (formerly The Cover Letter) share the bill with Harvest Thieves and Night Blooms at Barracuda, 611 E. 7th St.

Caleb DeCasper‘s video release show at The Electric Church, 5018 E. Cesar Chavez St., with Halloween Party Music, Paper Sister and Friday Boys. Doors at 9 p.m.

-It’s MY CRUDDY VALENTINE, a big show at The Far Out Lounge and Stage, 8504 S. Congress Ave., with Megafauna, GOAT and your MOM, The Sour Notes, Voidstrider, Ole Creepy, and Color Candy. Doors at 7 p.m., music at 8 p.m.

Hey Cowboy has an album release show at Cheer Up Charlie’s, 901 Red River, with Christelle Bofale, Lolita Lynn, and Houston-based singer/songwriter Teresa Vicinanza‘s musical project, Tee Vee.

Rawk. It’s an unholy trio of the harder stuff with FOR THE LOVE OF ROCK at Spider House, 2906 Fruth St., with Transit Method, Chill Russell and RATS RATS RATS. (This show’s got yer AMM host written all over it…)

-An acoustic set by Wild Child at the Cactus Café. Doors at 8 p.m., show at 8:30 p.m.

-Longtime AMM favorite Christy Hays performs at The AGBG, 1305 W. Oltorf. The show begins at 9 p.m. (Tell Christy that the Austin Music Minute maven sent ya.)

-As featured on today’s AMM, Jonathan Terrell brings the love to The White Horse, 500 Comal, with Devin Jake, and Missy Beth and The Morning Afters. Music starts at 8 p.m. Raise a glass, love.

Aquarius For Lovers, brought to you by The Watters and a bevy of friends at One-2-One Bar, 1509 S. Lamar Blvd.

Jake Garcia takes a break from recording with The Black Angels to spin the baddest garage, freakbeat, fuzz, & psych at THE BIG BEAT Valentine’s Day shindig at The 13th Floor, 1812 E. 12th St.

Gather Round

If you know, you know. Interestingly, it took a friend originally from Alabama/Tennessee to explain it to your Austin Music Minute host. In addition to any shows presented by Eastside Kings Festival at various locations, Skylark Lounge is the spot to witness incredible blues shows. And it’s the spot where the Austin Blues Society Gathering […]

Faces of ACL

Overwhelming. ACL Fest 2023 is literally only a few weeks – really, days – away. How the hell does the time fly by so quickly? But today’s AMM has details about a special ACL Fest retrospective, from the eye of a wonderful Austin photographer. Perhaps your AMM host’s opinion is slightly skewered for various reasons, […]

HAAM Day 2023

Your AMM host hears a lot of stories from local musicians about HAAM. These are praises shouted from the rooftops. “If it wasn’t for HAAM, I wouldn’t have been able to see a doctor…” “Without HAAM, I wouldn’t have been able to get this dental work I needed…” “If HAAM wasn’t here to help me, […]

…You Who Enter Here

Whether accompanying the marvel and wonder of ‘The Red Balloon,’ complimenting the stunning imagery of Enchanted Rock, or adding an extra jolt of irreverence to a hilarious revised edition of ‘The Return of Draw Egan’, Montopolis delivers a unique storytelling experience with incredible scores by composer Justin Sherburn. This week, the ensemble presents a special […]

Diez Y Seis

It’s a common thing to see a lot of bars and businesses bringing the party on Cinco de Mayo every May. It’s also a bit odd, considering it’s not the biggest celebrated Mexican holiday. May 5 commemorates an 1862 victory against the French in the Battle of Puebla, but a day of much greater importance […]

Worse For Wear

Track by singular track, Alain Paradis edges closer to the 2024 release of a new Holy Wire album. Paradis’ dark synth electro-pop creation from Brooklyn, now a full band in Austin, unveils another sonic piece coursing in an ’80s darkwave/post-punk vein, “Worse For Wear,” an irresistibly upbeat melody drawing you into melancholic brooding over a […]

Catharsis

Bedroom pop project Skateland is the creation of songwriter Dorian Williams II. Earlier this year, KUTX’s February 2023 Artist of the Month released the EP New Wave Revival, as haunted in its melodies and vocals as it is lyrically. It’s not necessarily sadness that dominates the overall arch, but Williams has described creating music as […]

Havoc

It’s understood that certain platforms are commonly utilized for a significant amount of musical exploration, but your AMM host prefers Bandcamp, which is where your aforementioned host had a field day with a bunch of Gus Baldwin releases. Full volume, full throttle, starting in all caps with “LOAN SHARK” and “KILLER OF THE MAN II,” […]
