Steve Earle and The Dukes: “Dublin Blues” (Live at the Four Seasons)

Since his 1986 debut album, Guitar Town, San Antonio’s Steve Earle has been one of the biggest driving forces of outlaw country and rockabilly in Texas and beyond. And in case you haven’t been keeping up, the past few decades have witnessed Earle overcoming addictions and embracing outspoken political views over the course of nearly twenty studio albums and countless live shows.

Still supported by his ever-ready Dukes, the latest endeavor for Earle is his upcoming Guy Clark tribute album, Guy, out next Friday! Last Friday Steve Earle and The Dukes paid us a visit at the Four Seasons before getting deep in their current national tour and in a belated St. Patty’s Day spirit, let’s listen back to Steve’s live cover of Guy Clark’s “Dublin Blues”!

The Beat Goes On

The chaos and insanity of the beast we know as SXSW – ol’ Hurricane South-By – has come and gone, leaving a pile of exhausted people in its wake. But the Austin Music Minute is here to kindly remind you that the music continues in our fair city, even after the parties have ended and the visitors have departed. Here in the ATX, music is allyearlong.

When you’ve recovered, get back on out and see some shows. Support our local artists, purchase their music, and support their well-being (donate to HAAM and SIMS for a start). And mark your calendar for Thursday, when Kalu and the Electric Joint continue their residency at C-Boy’s Heart and Soul, 2008 S. Congress Ave. And for this show, the band will do a special acoustic set, starting at 10:30 p.m.

Days off? What days off? Let’s do this. Recommended.

Texas Standard: March 18, 2019

Wallace Hall fought a bitter battle with the University of Texas alleging corrupt admissions policies. Considering new revelations, was he right all along? We’ll have a conversation with the former University of Texas regent about a college admissions process once dubbed affirmative action for the advantaged. Also, when it comes to performance based pay for teachers, do some teachers have a built in advantage over others? And a ruling in a case that could hold gunmakers liable in the wake of mass shootings. Those stories and so much more today on the Texas Standard:

Wyclef Jean: “Hips Don’t Lie”(Live at the Four Seasons)

With South By South West officially in the bag we can finally return to our normal lives, but do we really want to?! All this week we’ll be revisiting our favorite KUTX Live at the Four Seasons recordings, starting today with legendary songwriter and producer Wyclef Jean.

Already a household name for his critical role in The Fugees and subsequent solo career, Wyclef has just released the collaborative album Wyclef Goes Back to School (Volume 1), a record that highlights young hand-picked up-and-comers worthy of international recognition. Last week Jean featured Jeremy Torres and Jazzy Amra when he stopped by the Four Seasons for a stripped-down acoustic performance, filled with career-spanning insights and a healthy level of braggadocio from the French-Haitian superstar. In between Jean’s boastful but uplifting storytelling, he showed off the his raw musicianship and right now you can relive the intimate early morning rendition of “Hips Don’t Lie” – originally performed by Shakira and produced by Wyclef Jean!

Dr. Sheila Brooks (Ep. 15, 2019)

On this week’s In Black America program, producer and host John L. Hanson, Jr. presents a conversation with Dr. Sheila Brooks, founder, president ant CEO of SRB Communications, LLC, based in Washington, DC.  Dr. Brooks is the author of Lucille H. Bluford and the Kansas City Call: Activist Voice for Social Justice.

Asymmetry: Past & Future

Dating back to when we were kids, two weeks into the future seems a lot longer than two weeks in the past. Even as adults we know two weeks is the same length regardless of when it takes place and yet we still experience this asymmetrical mindset.

In this episode of Two Guys on Your HeadDr. Art Markman and Dr. Bob Duke discuss asymmetry between the past and future.

Texas Standard: March 15, 2019

A rare, bipartisan rebuke over the border as the republican-run senate votes to block the president’s emergency declaration, what happens next? We’ll explore. Also, it’s being called the biggest conservation move on South Padre Island in two decades. Thousands of acres of land set aside to save a sea turtle. And you’ve heard the talk of a polar vortex, reports on this week’s bomb cyclone. But when it comes to monster meteorological events, what’s in a name? Plus, Emily Ramshaw of the Texas Tribune with the week that was in Texas politics, today on the Friday edition of the Texas Standard:

KUT Weekend – March 15, 2019

Texas Standard: March 14, 2019

The 15th democrat and the second Texan has made it official: he’s running for President. But do the numbers add up for Beto ‘O Rourke? We’ll have more on the announcement by a former congressman from El Paso who wants to take on Donald Trump for President. Also, in conservative Midland, a test for the Castle Doctrine following the shooting death of a policeman. And the east Texas mayor who’s banning the STAAR test, and hoping other mayors will follow suit. It looks like some just might. Plus Omar Gallaga with the tech buzz from SXSW, and a whole lot more today on the Texas Standard:

Black Pumas: “Fire”

SXSW gets hairier before it gets easier and we commend all these cats clawing their way through it! We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Black Pumas, the silky retro soul collaboration between vocalist Eric Burton and producer-guitarist Adrian Quesada, who became a KUTX favorite after the release of their song, “Black Moon Rising”. Black Pumas have hinted at more recorded material for a while now, and they recently put out their sophomore single just in time for their SXSW!

Last night Black Pumas played at Banger’s and they unleash their dark feline ferocity once again tonight with a show at Barracuda and again tomorrow at the Radio Day Stage! Spark up the new single before you see ’em get live and wild with “Fire”!

Ama: “Hold” [PREMIERE]

SXSW is a great time to discover international artists and provide a platform for local up-and-comers. Speaking of which, Austin songwriter and visual artist Blair Robbins just made her official festival debut alongside her quintet Ama. Robbins had been an integral member of the group Milezo for years and when she’s not leading Ama through avant-garde and melancholy indie rock, she holds her own as an accomplished solo performer .

Last night Ama played to a full house at 720 Club and you can expect their full-length Both/And sometime in the near future! You may just bump into the talented players behind Ama somewhere in the SXSWild and to help you with your musical discovery, check out a previously unreleased single from Both/And, “Hold”!

Texas Standard: March 13, 2019

The biggest college admissions scandal ever? With a Texas coach one of 50 charged over corruption in college admissions, what’s fair versus what’s legal? Why the federal probe of wealthy parents securing spots at elite colleges and universities for their own kids may or may not bring reforms in higher ed. Also, were pilots warnings about the safety of the Boeing 737 Max ignored by authorities? The Dallas Morning News makes some stunning discoveries. We’ll talk to one of their investigators. Plus why a new album by Houston’s own Solange matters way beyond the music itself. Those stories and so much more today on the Texas Standard:
